Daniel Melamed and Laurie Pawlitza invited to speak before the House of Commons' Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights on Bill C-78
Overview
Daniel Melamed and Laurie Pawlitza, partners in our Family Law Group, have been chosen as two of the witnesses selected by the House of Commons' Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights to provide evidence on the provisions of Bill C-78. The bill proposes a number of significant reforms that will reshape family law in Canada.
Bill C-78 proposes to make substantive amendments to three acts: the Divorce Act, the Family Orders and Agreements Enforcement Assistance Act and the Garnishment, Attachment and Pension Diversion Act. According to the Department of Justice, the four objectives of the Bill are to promote the best interests of the child, address family violence, help reduce child poverty, and make Canada's family justice system more accessible and efficient.
Bill C-78 was referred to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights in May 2018 and the Committee will commence its hearings in November.
