Torkin Manes Acknowledges International Holocaust Remembrance Day
Overview
"I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must—at that moment—become the center of the universe."
— Elie Weisel, writer, professor, political activist, Nobel laureate, and Holocaust survivor
Every year on January 27, Torkin Manes joins communities around the world to take time to remember one of the most memorable and poignant days in history – the anniversary of the 1945 liberation of the largest Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Established in 2005 by the United Nations, International Holocaust Remembrance Day provides an opportunity to honour the memory of the six million Jews and other targeted minorities who were murdered in the Holocaust. With antisemitism rising globally, the Day’s importance has resonance now more than ever.
